A thrilling EFL Cup semi-final first leg has left Arsenal with the advantage, but Chelsea's young star, Alejandro Garnacho, has given the Blues a fighting chance. Despite goalkeeper Robert Sanchez's mistakes, which led to two Arsenal goals, Garnacho's brace kept Chelsea in the hunt.
Sanchez's errors were glaring: he couldn't claim Declan Rice's corner, allowing Ben White to score early, and then let a cross slip through his fingers for Viktor Gyokeres to double the lead. But Garnacho, a former Manchester United winger, responded with two goals of his own, first guiding Pedro Neto's cross home and then volleying in a second after Kepa Arrizabalaga's clearance.
Chelsea's new head coach, Liam Rosenior, faces a tough task. He's up against the Premier League leaders, who've only lost twice this season, and his team has struggled, winning just three of their last 13 games. Rosenior's first home match ended in defeat, and he's dealing with a host of issues, including injuries and suspensions, as well as fan discontent directed at the club's hierarchy.
For Arsenal, this victory is a big step forward. Manager Mikel Arteta made eight changes for this game, bringing in his strongest lineup, and it paid off. Ben White, a key player in the back four, scored the opener, and Gyokeres, with his goal and assist, provided a much-needed boost to Arsenal's attacking options. The Gunners have now gone unbeaten in 10 matches, and the EFL Cup could provide an early trophy boost as they aim for Premier League and Champions League glory.
But here's where it gets controversial: Chelsea's goalkeeping situation may need addressing, with Sanchez's errors proving costly. And this is the part most people miss: Rosenior's tactical adjustments, like deploying Fofana to man-mark Arsenal's creator Odegaard, showed early signs of his identity as head coach. Despite the challenges, Chelsea's hopes of reaching Wembley remain alive, but they'll need to overturn a one-goal deficit at the Emirates Stadium on February 3rd.
