A Quiet Shift: Vernon's Population Story Unveiled
Vernon's population growth is undergoing a subtle yet significant transformation. While it may not grab headlines, this demographic shift is a fascinating glimpse into the city's future.
But here's where it gets controversial: Vernon's population growth rate has hit its lowest point since 2010-11. The 2025 estimate for Greater Vernon, including Coldstream and nearby areas, stands at 73,500, a mere 357-person increase from 2024. That's a 0.48% hike, the smallest since 2010-11's 0.1% increase.
And this is the part most people miss: Vernon's population is also aging. The average age of residents in Greater Vernon is now 47.1, the highest since Stats Canada started tracking in 2001. For context, the 2001 average age was 40.9.
The senior population in Vernon is leading this trend, growing by 2.4% from 20,517 to 21,013 in 2024. Seniors now make up a substantial 28.5% of Vernon's population.
In contrast, the youth population (0-14 years old) has decreased, dropping from 9,550 to 9,443.
This slowdown in growth mirrors other Okanagan cities. Kamloops, for instance, saw a 0.2% shrinkage, while Kelowna's growth has slowed, losing its title as Canada's fastest-growing city.
On a provincial level, B.C. grew by 0.5%, while nationally, Canada's population increased by 0.9%.
So, what does this mean for Vernon? Is this a cause for concern or a natural progression? Should we be discussing strategies to attract a younger demographic, or is this an opportunity to celebrate and cater to an aging population? These are the questions we should be asking.
