West Sacramento Celebrates MLB Rookie of the Year Nick Kurtz
In a moment of pride for the community, West Sacramento has officially recognized Major League Baseball player Nick Kurtz, who recently earned the prestigious title of 2025 American League Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year. This acknowledgment took place during a recent Board of Commissioners meeting, where the city honored Kurtz, a standout player for their very own Athletics team.
On January 20, during the meeting, the board unanimously passed a resolution declaring this day as "Nick Kurtz Day" in celebration of his remarkable achievement. The Rookie of the Year Award is a significant accolade that honors the most exceptional first-year players in Major League Baseball, and Kurtz's win marks a noteworthy milestone.
During his inaugural season, Kurtz showcased impressive statistics, finishing with a batting average of .290, along with an outstanding 36 home runs and 86 runs batted in over 117 games. What’s even more remarkable is that he led all rookies in Major League Baseball in both home runs and OPS (On-base Plus Slugging), boasting an impressive OPS of 1.002—this statistic places him among the best ever for a rookie with at least 400 plate appearances, as noted by MLB records.
